The Play Ahead

Parents, consider taking your involvement in the soccer community to the next level, and become a USSF-certified referee this year. Read on below.. . Contact George Thomas for more information, 507-457-0403.

The 2010 Winona Referee Certification/Recertification Clinic will be held March 6 & 7, at Winona State University Purple Rooms.  The new referee clinic will run both days, Each class will begin at 8:30 AM, and will run until ~ 3:30...  Total time in the 2 sessions is about 5 hours LESS than last year!!  Some of the time will be in the Gymnasium as trainers are now being asked (rightfully so) to go some "game like situational" training to help us all better understand the game, and learn how to better position ourselves on the field...  Nothing like setting us up for success!! If over 18 years of age a background investigation form must be filled out, and notarized prior to the class.

  • Fellow Soccer Refs-    Thanks for your interest in supporting local Soccer by means of being a Referee.  The kids can't play without us!  Plus - it is a great way to get paid for getting exercise!!

Recertification for Returning Refs and all new enrollees:

Please read the enclosed, and then go to this link, which will be the first of several links you will need to get thru.  One important step is to get Registered as a USSF Ref - so that you will have your own Referee #  (a 16 digit ID #), and a password to gain access to their web site.  Returning Refs will use their existing USSF ID # & Password on the USSF site.  Pre-pay & proceed....

So, the starting point is this link:  http://www.minnesotasrc.org/

New Refs will need to get a USSF ID # & Password, plus pay on-line.
Look for the "Registration" Tab on the left, and go thru that link and find "New Referee" to get started...

If 3/6 & 3/7 don't work for you locally, there are plenty of other classes available...  For example, while we schedule the 2 classes for 1 weekend, Rochester has Day 1 on 3/6, and Day 2 is a week after  (3/13)...   You pay $40 once, and you can sign up w/ either set of classes, or a mix thereof...

Keep in mind, once you go thru the (~) 2 day course, next year the Recertification class is only 4-5 hours max...

In both cases, there's an On-line training course that walks you thru the rules and key questions.  You have to pass this test, but unlike high school or college, you can keep taking the test until you pass..   So - everyone passes!!  This is a Win-Win scenario.

On becoming a referee: An open letter to area soccer parents

I know that many parents are looking for ways to improve the soccer experience of their child. Becoming a soccer referee is a very important way by which parents can help to make their childs soccer experience safer and more enjoyable. As soccer grows in our community, the number of our teams increases and so do the number of games played in Winona. To make sure that every game is run properly for the benefit of every child, we need more adult referees. For this reason, I would like to encourage more parents to become a soccer referee. This coming season, WYSA is making it more convenient for Winonans to become certified referees. WYSA will host a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) referee clinic right here in Winona. Please consider setting aside that weekend to take the referee course. By attending the course, you can learn a lot about this wonderful game your child plays and you can actively participate in the development of this sport in our community. (If you are unable to attend the referee clinic in Winona, please consider attending one of the clinics held around Minnesota.) Current referees can attend the recertification clinic here in Winona, as well.Once you become a certified referee, you can start out as an assistant referee (formerly known as linesman). As you gain confidence and experience, you can accept assignments to be a center referee. Whatever role you take, you can be certain that you are helping to make the soccer experience of your child better and safer. For those of you who decide to become a referee, I promise to assist you as best as I can both on and off the field. I cannot speak for the other experienced referees in our community, but I am certain that many of them will be willing to help you as well. I know that mentoring new referees is a very effective way of improving officiating for all.If you have any questions about the clinic, please call me. And remember, reffing is one of the few jobs for which you can actually say, I whistle while I work. As a soccer ref, you also become one of the MIB, or WIB if you are a soccer mom.

Any questions, please contact me, George Thomas, USSF State Referee, 507-457-0403, or by email <gthomas@hbci.com>.

Sincerely,Gabriel Manrique

Winona's Mentoring Program with the Fourth Official
With a better-than-usual number of returning second-year referees, we're proud to share our success with other soccer clubs. Our program is simple, wherever possible, and especially when experience dictates, we place a fourth official on the touchline to mentor new assistant referees, and to coach new center referees, as well as to help manage substitutions, coaches, and fans. The 'Fourth' earns the same pay as the assistant. The results are impressive. We believe our novice referees develop faster, make the right calls more often, and have fewer difficulties.
