Summer Competitive League
Play Important Details
Teams usually play Mon-Wed, or Tue-Thu, often with one game
at home and one on the road. Most coaches practice at least two
other days per week. Weekends may be free, or in tournament
play, depending on the team.
Each team requires four to five automobiles to reach an away
game. Parents are expected to share in driving.
Most teams carry oranges for half-time, and sodas or juice for
the end of the game. Players should carry a clean change of
clothes, money for one fast food meal, and a personal two-quart
water container.
Yo! Players
, sharing water jugs spreads "mono," which can take you and
your team mates out of play for the entire season!
Caution, Parents!
Please instruct your kids to drink only from their own water
containers.
Micro-Soccer
The Winona Youth Soccer
Association sponsors a youth micro-soccer program for boys and
girls ages 5 through 9 years. The program consists of one-hour
practice/game sessions.
These early learning experiences
are the most important and should be non-threatening for young soccer
players.
What kind of program is micro-soccer?
Each practice will be divided into two parts. The first will focus
on fun warm-up games designed to get youngsters playing many soccer-related
activities that will maximize their participation. The second
half of practice will involve the players playing micro-soccer,
a soccer game of only 3- or 4-a side. This allows for youngsters
to play with fewer players on teams, therefore getting the most
opportunity to learn and play the game. The emphasis is on
playing soccer and will encourage the following:
5 and 6 -year olds
: Fun activities (everyone has a ball), small side games.
7-year olds: Use small
side as the basic format, but begin to introduce additional players
per side. Continue building skills. Can work into two groups one
working on skills and the other playing fun match-related games.
8-year olds: Continue
to work in small side games, but begin to get them ready for the
8-a-side games that they will be graduating to with traveling
teams. Prepare them for throw-ins, penalties, free kicks and offsides.
9 and 10 -year olds
: Non-traveling team players will have an opporturtunity to sharpen
their skills in both the small side and 8-a-side format. Prepare
them for throw-ins, penalties, free kicks and offsides.
